There are numerous delightful restaurants in the vicinity, both in the surrounding pretty villages and in the larger nearby towns. The following is just a selection, and we have given a broad indication of quality/price. If you need assistance with booking arrangements, please do not hesitate to ask. Particularly with the more local restaurants, it is always worth mentioning that you are staying at La Logerie.
Le Diamant, Mauprevoir
The local bar/restaurant. A 4 course set meal is available at lunchtime at a cost of €10.50 and in the evening there is an à la carte menu. Sundays between 11h-15h is a ‘brunch’consisting of English breakfast with wine & coffee for €13.50. Every 2 weeks on Wednesday evenings is a theme evening buffet at €25 including wine. Snacks are also served during the day. Closed Mondays.
Le Payroux, Payroux
Recently reopened under new management. Four different set meals, ranging from €13 to €23 as well as à la carte. Open 7 days a week. Excellent quality food at good value prices. Pleasant ambiance & very good service.
Le Saint-Romain, Saint-Romain en Charroux
An excellent value restaurant – a challenge to eat all that is put in front of you! A husband and wife partnership, he is the chef, and Madame is “front of house”, very eccentric with a peculiar sense of humour and a dress sense all her own! Average cost per person £7 – £10.
Hotel du Commerce, Civray
New owners & recently refurbished. Good menu & value for money in pleasant surroundings. Terrace overlooking the Charente river available during the summer.
Auberge de l’Ecurie, Usson-du-Poitou
Extensive menu, good choice of wines, excellent standard. Towards the end of the evening the chef invariably comes round to check that all is well. Madame, who controls front of house, is charming, if somewhat eccentric. Average cost per person £15 – £20.
Le Vieux Chateau, Gencay
Excellent quality food, particularly good reputation for fish. Popular with the locals and has a good atmosphere. Recently extensively refurbished. Price range £15 -£25 per person.
Hotel/Restaurant du Barrage
Small intimate restaurant, charmingly traditional décor, overlooking the River Vienne at L’Isle Joudain. Very good value, with comprehensive choice of fixed price menus (average cost including wine £15). Simple and inexpensive wine list.
Auberge de la Tour
Pretty restaurant overlooking the River Vienne at St. Germain de Confolens, itself worth a visit, to include the ruins of the old chateau, situated high on the hill with magnificent views of the River Vienne and the surrounding countryside. Also in the village are one or two interesting craft shops. Restaurant prices – mid range, approximately £15 per head plus wine. The wine list is surprisingly comprehensive, ranging from modest cost to very expensive, so choose with care.
Hostellerie Charlemagne, Charroux
Good and varied imaginative menu, attractive table presentation and good ambience. One of our favourite restaurants in the area. During the winter months there is a very attractive log fire which along with the décor and lighting provides an intimate atmosphere. In summer, it still retains a cosy feel. Price range – £20 – £25.
La Grimolee, Port de Salles
A delightful restaurant on the banks of the Vienne. During the summer you can enjoy an aperitif on the terrace overlooking the river. First class food and presentation, beautifully presented in excellent surroundings. Quite an expensive restaurant for this area, but definitely worth it for that special meal. There are three set menus ranging from €16 to €35 plus a la carte.
Le Bistro de l’Absynthe, Poitiers
Situated in rue Carnot (near to the Carnot car park) this bistro/restaurant is owned by Camita, originally from Cornwall, and her French husband who is the chef at Vingelique (see below). Excellent food, both in quality and variety, and particularly good value at lunch time -from €8 very popular at lunch time, so advisable to book.
Vingelique
Also owned by the same couple who own Le Bistro de l’Absynthe. An excellent gourmet restaurant & our favourite. The décor, ambiance & service are first class, as is the food. It is also extremely good value with 2 courses for €20 or 3 for €30 as well as a ‘plat de jour’ at lunch time for €9.
La Taverne de Maitre Kanter, Poitiers
Again situated in the rue Carnot, this is a large restaurant with a wide choice of food, but specializing in seafood and dishes from the Alsace region of France. Quality and service is good, with the added advantage that the restaurant is open seven days a week from noon until midnight.
La Table du Jardin, Poitiers
A charming small restaurant, situated at 42, rue du Moulin a Vents (near to the place de Notre Dame). Decorated in a most original way, representing the garden, including washing lines, wheel barrow etc. Delightful food, and reasonably priced. Very popular so you may have to wait for a table at lunch time or book in advance.
